Accessibility Guidelines

The following are instructions to help you adjust things like text and images to best suit your needs by using Internet Explorer 6 & 7 browsers. You will need the Menu bar if you cant see it at the top of your screen, right click anywhere on the toolbar and select "Menu bar"

To remove the Formatting and use the Internet Explorer default styling:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'
  2. Then select the 'General' tab and click on 'Accessibility'
  3. Click in each of the three boxes to show ticks in order to change the font sizes, styles and colours
  4. Finally if you have your own style sheet and wish to use it, click the box at the bottom
  5. Click 'OK'.

To change the text font:

Text with a sans serif font (such as Aerial or Tahoma) is often easier to read on a computer screen than a serif font (such as Times New Roman). To change the text font:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'
  2. Then select the 'General' tab and click 'Fonts'
  3. In the 'Web page font' and 'Plain text font' lists, choose the fonts you would like to use
  4. Click 'OK'. (In order that this works you will need to follow the instructions at the top of this page so that you can "ignore font styles specified on web pages")

To increase the size of text:

  1. On the 'Browser' menu click 'View' (if you cant see the browser menu, right click anywhere on the toolbar at the top of the screen and select "Menu bar")
  2. Click 'Text size'
  3. Choose the size of text. (In order that this works you will need to follow the instructions at the top of this page so that you can "ignore font styles specified on web pages")

To change typefaces and background colours:

Combinations of fonts, typefaces and background colours used in web page design can sometimes result in text being difficult to read, but you can choose settings to suit you. For example black text on a yellow background gives a distinct contrast, so to change the text colour and background colour:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'
  2. On the 'General' tab, click 'Colours'
  3. Deselect the 'Use Windows Colours' tick box
  4. Select the box next to 'Text' and choose a colour
  5. Click 'OK'
  6. Select the box next to 'Background' and choose a colour
  7. Click 'OK'.(In order that this works you will need to follow the instructions at the top of this page so that you can "ignore font styles specified on web pages")

To stop graphics from appearing on web pages:

  1. Under 'Tools', click 'Internet Options'
  2. On the 'Advanced' tab, scroll down to the 'Multimedia' heading
  3. Click on the graphics options ('animations', 'videos' and 'pictures') to remove the ticks
  4. Click on 'Apply', and then click on 'OK'
  5. If graphics still appear, select 'View' then 'Refresh' from the toolbar, or press F5.

Bigger Browser Window

To hide all the tool bars at the top of the screen and so increase the size of the browsers window:

  1. Click 'View' from the Menu bar and then 'Full Screen' from the toolbar. (alternatively press F11 on your keyboard)

Other Options

There are other options to tailor web pages that help make them easier to read. These may be found under the 'Tools' menu:

  1. Click on 'Internet Options'
  2. Select the 'Advanced' tab
  3. Choose from the options available to improve visibility.
